The City High Sabbatical makes experiencing different cultures a possibility for City High students looking to go abroad. For Class of 2027's Maya Bravo, that meant spending the month of July in Japan to study the language and culture.

Afforded this wonderful opportunity through the World Affairs Council of Pittsburgh's Global Travel Scholars Program, we asked Maya to share about her experience abroad.

Q: What was your experience like? Did it pan out like you expected or were you surprised?

Some parts did not pan out exactly as I thought they would, but I still had a lot of fun. I wish I was still in Japan!

Q: What was something new that you learned about the culture of the country you visited?

Japanese people really love to have things flowing. In my experience while visiting, they don't like when things go off track. During my time there, it was always busy, but things would flow just right.

Q: What was your favorite experience during your time there?

I enjoyed shopping and exploring the city. It was beautiful. I've dreamed of being there for so long, so it was very interesting to finally see it in person.
 

Q: What is a piece of advice you would give to another City High student interested in studying abroad?

Please—I will stress this—be open-minded! Try new things. Take in your experience. Immerse yourself. That's what made my trip so much fun! The number one thing you can do is have fun.
