City High Student Addresses impact of restrictions around "Teen Takeovers" in Pittsburgh

Class of 2027 student, Jade Hefflin, was one of the teens who was quoted in the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette talking about the impact of recent rules implemented to restrict the amount of teen violence in Downtown Pittsburgh and surrounding neighborhoods.
Hefflin recently shared about her own experience as a high school student attending school in Downtown Pittsburgh.
“The security guard came up to us [and said], ‘I don’t know if you guys are 18 but…I see your book bags on.' I was literally just sitting on a bench in Market Square because — I don’t know, this was when they had just put the benches out [for the season] and it was nice outside,” she shared with the Post-Gazette.
Hefflin was also part of the Pittsburgh-based Youth Enrichment Services’ two-day Violence Prevention Symposium earlier this month. The theme for this year's symposium was "Healing Through Community", and brought together teens, educators, and community leaders with the goal of starting conversations around how to make our local community safer. Topics explored in breakout sessions included conflict transformation, community wellness, belonging, family connections, and building trust through collaboration.
