Hi, my name is Lauren. In this section you are going to read a lot about pets and other animals. In my very first article, I will tell you a bit about what you should expect from this section in the future and how animals, especially pets, impact so much of our lives!

This six-year-old brown tabby named Bella is a loving cat who will never pass up a chance for some quality lap time. But she also is a playful gal who enjoys batting around kitty toys, especially furry catnip mice. Likewise, a fast-moving laser light is a challenge that Bella can’t resist, and she loves to race after it.

Bear is a handsome and refined longhaired gray cat with beautifully soulful green eyes and a gentle disposition. This quiet and mature fellow came to Animal Friends only because his owner’s new spouse was allergic to Bear. So now this big guy with an even bigger heart is waiting for someone new to love him and take him home.

Looking for a gentle giant? Let us introduce you to Jack, a sweet boxer mix. Jack walks very nicely on a leash and loves to explore the grounds at Animal Friends. He often turns to his human companion on a walk as if asking approval or to seek an approving pat or comforting scratch. |

How do you feel about boosting a shy friend’s confidence? Ginny is a beautiful but somewhat timid lab mix. When she first came to us, she was a little unsure about being handled, but she is beginning to come out of her shell a little, and now enjoys stroking and gentle cuddling. We do notice that Ginny has some fear with men, so we wonder if a man may have upset her in the past. |

Notes: It's hard to believe that this pretty girl came to us as a stray. Amber is a loving, outgoing, soft girl who just loves to give headbutts and receive kisses. She's only 5 years old, and after spending a little time in a foster home, she's now ready to find a forever home of her own. Amber has a gorgeous face with a black muzzle that makes her look even more exotic than she is. She would make a lovely companion for a lucky person. Baby Bunny is a calm, laid back eight-year-old black and brown Labrador retriever mix. She will wait calmly for you to enter her cage or clip on her leash, and she only barks when she wants some more love. She’s almost completely housebroken and is learning basic tricks like “sit” and “paw.” She loves to work on her tricks because she’ll do anything to earn a treat. She’s such a sweet girl that we frequently recruit her to serve as our canine greeter in our lobby. Baby Bunny would do best in a home with older children |

Bianca may be 3 years old, but she still thinks she's a kitten. Once a victim of neglect, Bianca is ready to find a loving home to spoil her.
Bianca is full of energy and loves to play. (She is a bit too energetic to be a perfect match for for small children.) She'd also like us to state for the record that she does not like dogs, but a home with another young, playful cat could just be the ticket to happiness for Bianca. For the time being, Bianca is living comfortably with 10 other cats hang out in our free-range rooms, but she is ready for a family of her very own. Come meet her!
Update: Bianca has spent a month in the home of one of our volunteers, who reports: "She was a joy to have in the home and uses her litter box faithfully!" |

(Every few weeks I am going to provide a section of this corner dedicated to pets and their health!)
Since Halloween is right around the corner, I'm leaving you with ways to keep your pet healthy this holiday.
1. Candy is for people, not pets.
2. Keep curious noses out of reach of lighted jack-o-lanterns; if they get knocked over, they could start a fire.
3.Try to keep your pets calm, like putting them in a quiet room. With all of the craziness of Halloween, your pet will get excited often, and eventually get stressed out. The calmer you can keep your pet the more fun the holidays will be for everyone.

"Dog Duties"
A nursery school teacher was delivering a station wagon full of kids home one day when a fire truck zoomed past. Sitting in the front seat of the fire truck was a Dalmatian dog. The children began discussing the dog's duties.
"They use him to keep crowds back, "said one youngster.
"No," said another, "he's just for good luck."
A third child brought the argument to a close. "They use the dogs," she said firmly, "to find the fire hydrant."
"Friendly Pig"
A man was on a walking holiday in a foreign country. He became thirsty so decided to stop at a stranger's home for something to drink.
The lady of the house invited him in and served him a bowl of soup by the fire.
There was a wee pig running around the kitchen - running up to the visitor and giving him a great deal of attention.
The visitor commented that he had never seen a pig this friendly.
The housewife replied: "Ummm, he's not that friendly. That's his bowl you're using"

White Cats Make Poor Mothers?????
This is actually an opinion, this dosen't have anything to do with the cat's ability to make a good mother, it only actually describes the cat as a hunter. It's white fur doesn't make very good camoflauge, so it would be spotted instantly if on the prowl.
Cats always land on their feet?????
While cats instinctively fall on their feet, and can survive falls from high places, they can get extremely hurt in the process. That is why closed windows and screens can protect pets.
Cats should drink milk everyday????
Cats shouldn't drink milk every day, it will not properly nourish them, they should drink water regularly.
