Internships Title

Hello My name is Brittney Russell and I am going to be writing the internship section for the 2006-2007 school year.

These past 4 years City High has given internships for students who have a interest in a particular career field that they would wish to go into. To obtain an internship, you at least have a C' in workforce, and an internship will be given to you by what you would like to do. The internship lasts for 13 weeks, and given a certain amount of hours to complete for a successful internship.

I would like to share with you my internship with the New Pittsburgh Courier.

Since January 2006, I was given my internship by Ms. Perhach, Internship Manager, who sent me to the New Pittsburgh Courier. I love to write, and journalism is what I want to major in when I attend California University of Pennsylvania (CALU). The New Pittsburgh Courier felt like home. My mentor was Deborah Todd, who is a Staff Writer there, and she was the most help to me during the whole three months. She gave me insight on how the atmosphere would be in a workplace, and what work I would be doing. I did the weekly calendars, metro, and even had my own piece of work that was published in the newspaper about the closing of some of the Pittsburgh Public Schools. Deborah also requested that if I wanted to write an article than it would be more than welcome, because they needed youth writers for the paper. I really felt like the New Pittsburgh Courier helped me throughout my time here in high school.

Besides my internship there, she got me in touch with Mr. Chris Moore, producer, talk show host, of On Q, on WQED. I was involved with the Pittsburgh Media Black Federation, and I got to write articles, that were published for the Urban Agenda. Through the time I spent at the Pittsburgh Media Black Federation, I found new friends who were also interested in journalism, and I found out alot about journalism that I hadn't already knew. It opened up alot of opportunities for me, to meet new people, exchange numbers, and get to talk to people in the media news in Pittsburgh, and local magazine business, and newspapers, The Pittsburgh Tribune Review, and the Pittsburgh Post Gazette. I also had the opportunity to meet the staff of KDKA, and also men from the miliary who shared their story with me about the War in Iraq. With this I was able to compose an international article and interview people from France, Saudi Arabia, Paris, and China who were all people who were visiting the U.S., or were students at Point Park University, in downtown Pittsburgh.

When still writing articles, or stories, I still call my mentor Deborah Todd, to help me gather thoughts, or ideas to start off with. She gives me alot of advice as a writer, and we have alot of things in common as writers. Through the internship give to me by City High it opened up doors for me that I never knew could. The experience was great and I hope that others will get a chance to experience great opportunities to help them along the way, as of now and in college.
