Allison Peters had the pleasure of interning at the Carnegie Museum of Natural History alongside mentor Sean McKelvey. Allison had an opportunity to work in the bonehunters quarry, the discovery room, conduct research and establish various special projects relevant to her personal interests.

Alysha Wilson was an intern at the Girls Scouts-Western PA Council. Under the leadership of mentor Kay Liss-Director of Funded Initiatives, Alysha was able to learn business etiquette through answering phone calls, working in the retail store, stocking merchandise and data entry.

Arturo Nieto interned under the direction of attorney Jackie Martinez at JBM Legal Immigration Group, LLC. While there, Arturo focused on various special projects centered on immigration law and visa issues along with answering calls, scanning and archiving files, and basic research. Arturo was able to capitalize on his networking skills with many individuals in this line of work including having lunch with a local federal judge.

Bob Dietz earned his internship credit at the Veteran's Leadership Program Pittsburgh Office, under the mentorship of Program Director Kenneth McCoy. One of Bob's primary responsibilities was the weekly management, uploads and updates to the organization's website. Bob is extremely interested in studying at a military academy and pursuing a military career, and the staff at VLP continues to assist Bob in his endeavors.

Brandon Norman completed an internship at Bernie's Photo Shop, Camera Exchange and the Photo Antiquities Museum. He was mentored by Curator & Education Director Scott Yoss, and became familiar with several branches of this photography enterprise – among them the photo museum, the camera exchange business, the retail store, the frame shop and the gallery.

Chaz Calloway completed an internship at Fourth River Associates, a practice providing executive coaching, training and consulting. Mentored by principle partner Mrs. Nancy Chubb, Chaz worked with a bio-feedback computer system and explored the field of psychology through videos, reading and basic research. Through this experience, Chaz was able to realize the complex nature of the field of psychology.

Chelsea Bendzsuk completed an internship at Littlearth Productions, Inc., a fashion design and manufacturing business specializing in unique purses, belts and other accessories. Mentored by owner Ava DeMarco, Chelsea was able to gain experience in inventory management, design, manufacturing and world-wide product distribution processes.

Chelsea Freeman attended an internship at A Small World II Early Learning Center, mentored by center Director Lynne Geidel. The center, a PA Keystone 4 star site, provided experience for Chelsea to work with many age groups. She discovered her favorite group, the pre-K class, and spent much of her time learning to assist the children in the areas of crafts, reading, play time and snack management.

Amani International Coffee House provided the site for Cody Nutting’s internship. Owner Terra Jones offered this opportunity for Cody to learn the entire business enterprise, including the bookkeeping and marketing facets of this business. Cody is interested in business and accounting, so the internship gave him a first-hand look at how a small business operates and tracks its business activities.

Desiree Niccoli had the opportunity to intern at VIZ/General Dynamics 4C Systems under the direction of mentor Joe Pedrazzoli. Desiree was trained on the use of the CoMotion Software, along with conducting data collection, management activities, and creating and using map visualization for a variety of company projects. The work Desiree produced was an integral part of the company’s overall mission and this internship experience allowed her to step out of her comfort zone and become more of an independent person.

Dustin Martin completed an internship at the architecture firm of Pfaffmann + Associates. Under the supervision of mentor and architect Steve Swartz, Dustin became familiar with various electronic drawing and modeling programs, and completed drawings which the firm will use toward the design of new conference room lighting fixtures. Dustin’s internship convinced him that he would like to consider architecture as his field of study after high school.

Eric Feher had the opportunity to intern at VIZ/General Dynamics 4C Systems under the mentorship of Joe Pedrazzoli. While at this site, he was able to gain a better understanding of computer hardware issues and the complexities of network engineering. This experience allowed Eric to confirm the importance and relevance of his technology classes at City Charter High School as well as gain additional technical skills under his belt.

Eric Williams interned with the Oakland VA Hospital-IT department under mentor Linda Klootwyck. While there, Eric worked on the standard operating procedures for the department and created a variety of PowerPoint’s that incorporated very important documentation and instruction for departmental meetings. Eric was truly integrated as a student employee in the department and created very useful information for years to come.

Anthony Allison, Teen Director at the Downtown Branch of the Greater Pittsburgh YMCA provided a sports, health & wellness internship for Jaren Crosby-Skinner. Jaren participated in the creation of a teen basketball tournament. His project included budgeting, recruiting for advertising and executing the tournament, and he was surprised to learn how much work it takes to plan for and carry out this type of a program.

Jessica Harriman was provided her internship at the City of Pittsburgh City Clerk's Office, under the mentorship of Asst. Deputy Dir. Mary Beth Doerty. While interning, Jessica attended city council meetings, learned to take minutes, worked in the records vault and also assisted in the general reception areas.

Under the mentorship of Susy Robison, Director of Volunteers and Education at the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, Julia Frankenberg completed an internship while learning about and assisting in several areas of the PSO. Included in her experiences were events at Heinz Hall, office updates to donor records, participation in youth and teen events, and reception / front desk duties.

Julia Johnson accepted an internship position as City Charter High School's first IT Department intern, under the mentorship of Technology Manager Ed Crist. Julia learned to assist with help desk inquiries, wiping and cloning laptops, assisting with other repairs and learning to serve as a student team leader.

Julian Payne completed an internship at the NEED office; a regional college access program. There he was able to focus on data collection, mailings, interview scheduling and other administrative duties. He had the opportunity to be mentored by both Arlene Holland and Sylvester Pace. As Executive Director of the organization, Mr. Pace provided additional opportunities for Julian through shadowing and networking events.

Lauren Krowitz earned her internship credit at the Pittsburgh Carnegie Science Center, under the direct mentorship of Angela Hillenbrand, Aquarium Program Assistant. Lauren learned to care for fish and other aquatic life at the center, and further her skills and knowledge of marine life. Lauren is considering a career in oceanography, and her internship helped expand her understanding and desire to work in this field.

Megan Schillinger had an opportunity of interning at the Children's Museum under the mentorship of Penny Lodge. At the museum, Megan worked in the art studio, the gravity room and was able to participate in many interactive activities with the children. Her love for the environment was able to be integrated into her internship experience and shared with the children she assisted on a daily basis.

Michael Taravella interned at City Theater under the mentorship of Tony Ferrieri-Director of Production. At the theater, Michael was able to gain experience in prop design, carpentry, painting, hauling set items and gaining an understanding of sound, lighting and script writing. This internship has piqued Michael’s interest in theater even more and he plans to continue to volunteer with the theater.

Miles Early spent his internship learning and working under landscape architect Frank Dawson at the architecture firm of Astorino's. Miles contributed to the base design of a Fred Roger's children’s' tribute sculpture planned to be erected on Pittsburgh's north shore. He also completed extensive research in green wall technology for his mentor's next projects in Pittsburgh. This internship confirms Miles’s interest in this field, and Miles plans on pursuing a degree in landscape architecture after high school.

Neighborhood Legal Services, Inc. a non-profit legal aid agency serving the Pittsburgh Region was the site for Morgan DePaolo’s internship. Morgan was exposed to various aspects of the legal process including attending afternoon court and providing department assistance for clients in need. Morgan plans to pursue a career in the field of law.

Nathan Schmidt interned alongside Physical Therapist Derek Coughenour at the Oakland VA Physical Therapy department. During his time at the Oakland VA Hospital, Nate was able to participate in inpatient activity ranging from exercising patients to gathering canes and walkers. He also had an opportunity to observe an orthopedic surgery first hand. This experience confirmed his interest in pursuing physical therapy as a career.

Nathan Williams interned at the Animal Rescue League under mentor Amber Hall. Nate was able to learn the operations of the shelter through administrative assistance, temp testing, training and walking the dogs and overall interaction with the animals. Nate’s upbeat personality fit in well with his co-workers and allowed for a smooth transition as a true team player.

Nichole Craig completed her internship at the National Aviary, under the mentorship of Intern Manager Chris Gaus. Nichole was taught to feed and care for birds and other wildlife, while working and learning alongside the college level interns.

Patrick McClung completed an internship at the PA Culinary Institute under the mentorship of Faculty & Development Coordinator and Management Instructor Jill Matthews, along with supervision from Chef Hunt and his team of chefs. Patrick rotated through and assisted the chefs in culinary classes, gaining first-hand knowledge in basic skills and several kitchens – pastry, seafood, poultry and soups to name a few. Patrick was also exposed to the business side of culinary arts.

Roqueal Pleasant earned her internship at A Small World II Early Learning Center, mentored by center Director Lynne Geidel. The center, a PA Keystone 4 star site, provided experience for Roqueal to work with her favorite age group - the upper toddler class. She gained first-hand experience in toddler care, crafts, reading, playtime and snack management.

Samantha Ennis completed an internship at St. Agnes School, assisting 2nd grade teacher Melissa Smiechowski in her classroom. Samantha learned about curriculum development, classroom instruction, reading strategies and assisted with the after-school program. Samantha has a natural talent for teaching and learned just how much work goes into this profession.

Sarah Short interned with mentor Chantel Gibson at Small World I Early Learning Center. Sarah was able to gain a better understanding of how an early learning center functions. She helped the kids get to sleep, updated the bulletin boards, organized the bookshelves, mail delivery, and various administrative tasks.

Sean Dehler was hosted for internship at the Allegheny Branch of the Greater Pittsburgh YMCA. Mentored by Director John Tairomino, Sean learned about and participated in numerous sports, fitness and wellness activities. Sean’s favorite projects included designing fliers for the swimming league, dodgeball and adult softball programs.

Under the mentorship of reading specialist Donna Payne, Tamika Jones interned at the Urban League Charter School, and often found herself rotating between teachers and classrooms. Tamika received a wide variety of exposure to the world of an elementary school teacher, and discovered just how much is involved in the teaching career.

Under the leadership of mentors Anthony Jefferson and Terri Snoe, Tarilee Walker was able to learn and better understand the business operations and techniques of running a beauty salon. Tarilee served as a receptionist, learned some basic accounting in the Beauty Bar store, as well as served as a stylist assistant. Tarilee’s experience confirmed her desire to pursue accounting as well as her passion to do hair.

Vincent Sciarretti interned at the Humane Society under the guidance of mentor Matt Record. Vince was responsible for cleaning animal crates/carriers, creating kennel cards, taking pictures of the animals and playing with the animals to name a few.
