Nijah Smith is completing her internship at Jackson/Clark Partners. Their project was the "Everybody Vote" Initiative, Super Voter Tuesday. She also assisted with preparations for the PA Hip Hop Political Convention. Mr. Clark said she is dependable and "Ready like Freddie and rock steady!

Jimmy Newborg's internship is at the Writing Center at the University of Pittsburgh. His mother, Beth Bateman-Newborg, is the Writing Center Outreach Coordinator and Director of the Freshman Engineering Writing Project. She said that he is appreciated and praised by other members of the Center for his conscientiousness and completion of assignments. He engaged in research and data collection on writing initiatives at engineering schools across the country. This is only one of the many projects to which he has contributed his abilities and expertise which have earned him the praise of accomplished writers at the University.

Steve Sufrin wants to be a sports announcer and was fortunate to get an internship with Bob Studebaker, daytime Jazz host and production director for WDUQ radio. While Bob is on the air, Steve is sitting right beside him on the computer, entering data on the songs that are played that day. Bob says that Steve "does great work and is fun to have around!"

As the "Calendar Girl" for the "New Pittsburgh Courier", Devlyn Brooks works each day with her mentor, Sonya Toler, getting information gathered and prepared for the newpaper. Ms. Toler said that Devlyn is a great asset in the office, willing to work hard and do a good job.

Amanda Paulus wants to be a teacher and is interning with Ms. Marsha Ekunfeo in the Arts Academics Department at Prospect Middle School. She loves art and math and sees a connection between them for her future career in education.

Tony Williams aspires to be a Navy pilot. His mentor is Lt. Scot Hughes of the Naval ROTC program at Carnegie Mellon University. Scot says the internship is definitely working, although he was worried about keeping Tony busy. However, the Executive Officer has tasks which Tony does first thing each day, using his creativity, without a lot of specific, time-consuming directions. Lt. Hughes says the quality and level of his work is above average. The ROTC program tries “to bring the fleet to Pittsburgh” for the midshipmen and Tony gets the benefit. Last Friday they were finished with their work, so Scot and Tony “relaxed” by doing SAT math problems!

Another City High student who plans on a health-related career is Tiarra Williams. She is working in the Respiratory Therapy Department at UPMC Shadyside. In the past few weeks she has seen a variety of treatments for patients at the hospital. Everyone in the department has praised her interest and enthusiasm , and she is pleased with the opportunity to learn more about this area of the hospital.

One of City High’s future writers is Taylor Brown. Her internship is with Leslie Fisher, the Executive Director of the Downtown Pittsburgh Chapter of the Rotary Club. Taylor has had lots of different duties in the office and she has had the opportunity to meet many of the members at the weekly meetings of the club. She will also assist with the production of the newsletter that Leslie has always had to do alone. Leslie says that Taylor “tackles each task with gusto!”

"Virus killer" Cassidy Flaherty works with his mentor, Kim Morrison, the Workplace Safety Manager for the City of Pittsburgh Personnel & Civil Service Commission and her partner, Mike Brlan. He got that title for researching a problem at home and killing a virus on an assistant director's computer. He is creating the first ever safety page for the City of Pittsburgh INTRANET, as well as redesigning the website with interesting, helpful and important links to procedures and documents. He also interacts with IT people and visits accident sites to help photograph and evaluate the scene.

Amber Phillips was told to follow this directive: "Use your time wisely and always appear busy" by Natisha Frye, Event Coordinator for the Pittsburgh Regional Minority Purchasing Council where she has her internship. This non-profit corporate organization certifies minority-owned and operated businesses. They provide networking opportunities and diversity in corporate procurement. Amber has been involved in various office tasks and computer work for the PRMPC. Natisha says that Amber is a joy to be around and that she is very professional in her work.

Lizz Czajkowski wants to be an accountant, and she is getting an excellent introduction to that career at the firm of Katz Ferraro McMurtry P.C. Her mentor, Bill Stayduhar, has her entering transactions in clients' software, proofreading the company website, and doing payroll tax returns. Bill says she is doing a great job, and everyone he has asked about her work agrees. Lizz says she definitely likes working there.

Keys2Work is a program committed to improving the workforce skills of future employees. Dan Hutton does computer work, burns CD's for the program kits, and is "a quick study, very helpful and cooperative" according to Administrative Assistant, Linda Parks. Dan says he really likes it there.

Looking very official in his County Coroner's shirt, Eric Williams has had a wide variety of experiences. People wonder how he has reacted to seeing autopsies,organs and tests. Eric leaves school every day eager to do it again! His good work has opened the door for future interns too!

Charnae is an intern at UPMC Braddock in the emergency room. Her mentor, Eveline Cameron, said that she is always on time, willing to learn and do a good job. She looks and acts so professionally in her City High lab coat that patients and staff often mistake her for one of them already! She said she loves having the chance to be where the action is.

Cherrell is also interning at UPMC Braddock, on the second floor nursing unit. Her mentor, Lynda Brettschneider, RN, praised her for being on time, following directions, and doing a great job. She has her doing a variety of tasks, and Cherrell has the opportunity to interact with patients as well. She said that some staff asked her if she was going to work the late shift, and she probably would if asked!

Brandon Baker has an opportunity to do some outdoor work with his mentor, Danielle Crumrine. She is the director of PA Cleanways, an organization based in the Terminal Buildings on Carson Street, that involves concerned citizens in reclaiming lots used as dumping sites around Pittsburgh. Other City High students have volunteered on her past clean-up projects, and she can always use more volunteers!

KT Bujak is interested in fashion design. Her internship is with "Little Earth Productions", a company in the Soho district near the Birmingham Bridge, that recycles rubber, license plates and bottle caps to make interesting and beautiful belts, purses and other items. KT will work everywhere in the company, starting with the shipping department. Her supervisor claims that she works so fast, they have a hard time keeping up with her! She will soon have a chance to suggest her ideas for new items of interest to teens. Look for her at City High, wearing samples of their products.

Dorisa King's internship is with "Council Kids", a Day Care program within the Council of Three Rivers American Indian Child Care in Knoxville. She chose this internship in preparation for a career as a child care provider. Her mentor involves her in all daily activities, but also uses her computer skills to prepare letters to the children's parents.

Sean Kahl is interning at Ariba (formerly Freemarkets). He spends his 2 1/2 hours a day working with different members of the computer support staff under the direction of his mentor, Jill Kucharski. Sean's remarks were, "It's interesting and fun. The guys are all nice and easy to work with".

Frances Clouston and Jaleeza Fulton are the first two members of the "Service Squad" at Children's Hospital, a group established specifically for City High students interested in health-related and child-related careers. Ms. Terrilyn Crouch, Coordinator of Group Volunteers, placed Jaleeza on the 10th floor, working with babies and very young children in a variety of duties. She expressed concern that she didn't have enough to do, so Terri stepped in and improved that situation!

Frances is on the 3rd floor, working part-time with Dr. Robert Yellon, an Ear,Nose & Throat specialist and performing other duties. She also loves her job and is looking forward to having a chance to be in the operating room next week.
