Internships at City High
In an effort to better prepare students for the workforce, City Charter High School has a curriculum titled “Career Readiness” to achieve this goal by a student’s graduation from the school. To accomplish this task, an Internship Manager on staff will implement the following plan of action:
Grade 10: A mentorship that would include a two-hour per month session to involve the student in the workplace. The mentor will gradually recognize the student’s abilities and train him/her in preparation for an Internship. This does not necessarily require that mentor and mentee spend each 2-hour session together. Rather, the mentor could arrange for the mentee to shadow others in the workplace or to attend a workshop or other outside activity related to the job. This enriches the student’s experience and gives deeper insight into the career.
Grade 11: With the assistance of his mentor, the student would begin and complete a 13-week Internship scheduled for one of the three trimesters of the school year. This would be real unpaid work time, 2 ½ hours per school day, under the supervision of the mentor or a representative of the firm or company. The immediate supervisor would grade the student’s performance using rubrics prepared by the Internship Manager, who would also make unannounced site visits with the student. During the months of April, August and December, when the students do not have classes, it is possible that the mentee could continue at the site for additional experience (and a salary).
Grade 12: The mentee could continue the same Internship during the designated trimester, if this is agreeable with the mentor, or request a different one from the Internship Manager. Other options will be to take higher level courses at City High or classes at one of the schools, colleges or universities nearby.
Each mentor must have current Criminal Record and Child Abuse Clearance forms. They are available at the State Office Building or through the Internship Manager at City High.
